Two bathrooms in marble-look porcelain

The old floors came out down to the slab. The shower and the tub walls were built on cement board with liquid waterproofing. Then marble-look porcelain went on both floors and the shower walls, with white tile around the tub.

FAQ

Tile installation questions

How long does tile installation take?

About 2 days for 500 sq ft and about 3 days for 1,000 sq ft in an empty home. Add about a day when an old floor has to come out first. Your written quote includes the timeline for your home.

How soon can I walk on new tile?

Light foot traffic is usually fine after about 24 hours. For about 3 days, while the grout cures, don't drag or roll heavy items across the floor. We set your furniture back on the last day, lifting it instead of dragging it. Heat and humidity can change these times, and we'll tell you what applies to your materials.

Can you install tile over existing tile or floors?

We usually recommend taking the old floor out. Some surfaces can take new tile over them when they're in good condition and properly prepared, and we'll tell you at the estimate if yours can.

What kinds and sizes of tile do you install?

Porcelain, ceramic, travertine, marble and mosaic, in every size, from small mosaics to large-format porcelain. We also set wood-look plank tile, herringbone and patterned layouts. The price depends on the tile, the size and the layout, so see our tile installation prices.

Do you use Schluter DITRA and KERDI?

Yes, and we're Schluter® Systems certified. Our standard tile floor gets a liquid crack-isolation membrane, and Schluter DITRA or DITRA-XL is available as an upgrade. For showers we recommend the Schluter system: KERDI or KERDI-BOARD on the walls, a KERDI-SHOWER tray and Schluter thin-set. Built that way, the installation may be eligible for the Schluter Systems lifetime warranty.

Which grout do you use?

We prefer MAPEI sanded grout, but each project can call for something different. Epoxy grout is also available. Ask about it at your estimate.

Do you seal travertine, marble and grout?

Yes, as a separate service. Natural stone and cement grout soak up liquids, and a sealer helps keep stains out.

Do you move the furniture?

Yes. We move your furniture, cover and protect it, and set it back exactly where it was on the last day.

Can I buy my own tile?

Yes, we install your tile. Or we help you find the best material and design and handle all the logistics, from measuring to ordering and receiving it.
