The flooring journal / Jacksonville & Northeast Florida

A practical homeowner checklist for furniture, deliveries, pets and the final walkthrough.

New flooring changes the room. A clear plan for installation day makes the work easier to live with.

This flooring installation checklist explains how to prepare for flooring installation in Jacksonville: what to clear, what to ask your installer, and what to plan before the crew arrives.

It complements our technical guide to subfloor preparation. Here, the focus is your household and the decisions around the installation.

Your installation-day plan

How should you prepare for flooring installation?

Confirm the written scope, agree who moves furniture and appliances, remove personal belongings, provide clear access, and plan a separate space for children and pets. Before work begins, ask about material delivery, room conditions, dust control, and when you can use each room again.

1. Agree on what the flooring estimate includes

Read the estimate as a list of responsibilities, not just a price per square foot. Two installation quotes can cover different work. Ask which rooms are included and whether removal, disposal, floor preparation, trim, and transitions are listed separately.

Flag heavy or delicate items early: a piano, aquarium, oversized sofa, built-in shelving, or a refrigerator with a water line needs a specific plan. Do not assume moving or reconnecting an item is included unless the written scope says so.

If you are still comparing budgets, our Jacksonville vinyl plank flooring cost guide explains the main cost categories. Your project estimate should reflect the actual rooms and existing floor conditions.

2. Clear personal belongings before the crew arrives

Empty shelves and furniture that will be moved. Pack fragile decor, electronics, loose cables, and valuables. Clear closet floors wherever new flooring will continue into the closet, and keep daily essentials somewhere you can reach without crossing the work area.

Photograph the rooms and any existing damage before work begins. This gives you and your installer a useful reference for the walkthrough.

3. Plan access, deliveries, and your daily routine

Choose a clear route from the delivery point to the rooms being renovated. Discuss parking, stairs, gates, and where materials can be placed without blocking entrances or walkways.

For a condo in Jacksonville Beach or Ponte Vedra Beach, check building rules before setting the work date. Ask management about service elevators, delivery windows, and any protection required in shared areas.

If the project includes the kitchen, plan meals and refrigerator access. If it includes a hallway or bedroom, ask how the work will be phased and whether there will be a usable route to sleeping areas and a bathroom.

4. Confirm the material and room requirements

Before delivery, confirm the exact product, color, installation method, and where the cartons should be stored. Follow that product’s current instructions for storage, temperature, humidity, and any required conditioning or acclimation. There is no single waiting period that applies to every LVP, laminate, or hardwood product.

Tell your installer about known leaks, previous water damage, or flooring that has moved or lifted. Let the crew assess the existing surface before you remove it yourself. Our guide to installing LVP over existing tile explains why that decision depends on more than appearance.

5. Ask how the work area will be separated

Floor removal and preparation can create noise and dust. Ask where cutting or grinding will happen, how nearby rooms will be protected, and what cleanup the estimate includes. Plan remote meetings or quiet activities away from the work area.

Keep children and pets away from tools, loose materials, open doors, and unfinished transitions. Choose their space before the crew arrives so it does not depend on moving through an active work zone.

Before installation day: confirm the arrival window, parking, access instructions, furniture plan, material location, and one contact person for questions. A short written checklist keeps everyone working from the same plan.

6. Plan the return to normal use

Ask separately about light foot traffic, moving furniture back, rolling heavy appliances, and cleaning. The answer depends on the flooring system, any adhesive or preparation products used, and the manufacturer’s instructions.

At the final walkthrough, review transitions, trim, door clearance, cleanup, and any remaining items together. Keep the product name, care instructions, written warranty information, and spare material for future repairs. Lift furniture or use the protection recommended for the floor rather than dragging it across the surface.

Flooring installation preparation: common questions

Do I have to move all the furniture myself?

That depends on your agreement. Confirm who handles each large item, whether moving is included, and where it will go. Remove small belongings and valuables yourself unless a different arrangement is written into the scope.

Can I stay home while the flooring is installed?

Sometimes, but the room layout and work sequence matter. Ask whether you will have safe access to a bathroom, sleeping area, and exit throughout the job. Whole-home work may require a different plan from a single-room installation.

Should I remove the old flooring before the estimate?

Usually the first step is to let the installer inspect it and agree on the scope. Existing tile, adhesive, trim, and the substrate can affect the plan. Do not start removal simply to make the estimate easier.

How long should I wait before moving furniture back?

Get instructions for the exact installed system. A floor that is ready for light walking may not yet be ready for heavy furniture or rolling appliances. Confirm the timing before scheduling movers or reconnecting equipment.
